About

Yuko is an aspiring humanitarian architect aiming to pursue a career with a strong emphasis on sustainable design and community development. She obtained her Master of Architecture degree from the University of British Columbia and a B.A. in Architecture from the University of Washington.

Yuko has had a life-long interest in sustainability principles, which she has further developed in her studies of its relationship to architecture. She is also committed to humanitarian work and has participated in a number of volunteer opportunities to contribute to the betterment of communities. In summer 2011, Yuko volunteered in tsunami relief in Northeastern Japan, which motivated her to investigate how architecture could aid in the sustainable reconstruction of a community. This lead to her graduation project where she researched and proposed a way in which architecture could be integrated with protective infrastructure to sustainably rebuild a tsunami-stricken city in Japan.

Following graduation, she moved down the coast to San Francisco for an opportunity of a lifetime, spending two years with Architecture for Humanity's global headquarters, first as a volunteer, design fellow, and ultimately earning her role as Creative Content and Branding Coordinator.  At Architecture for Humanity, she assisted in the development, management and promotion of the headquarter's global initiatives and visions, through managing the creation of various creative content in a range of mediums, both digital and print. Through actively pursuing opportunities learning, working and volunteering in an array of contexts, Yuko has accumulated a wide range of skills and knowledge in humanitarian design.

She is most eager to begin her career in designing thoughtful spaces in close collaboration with clients, raising awareness about our environment to enrich the lives of individuals and encourage community cohesion.
